What children learn in Year 2 English
Year 2 English builds confidence in spelling longer words and writing in full sentences. Children learn new spelling patterns, including suffixes such as –ness and –ful, and use apostrophes for contracted forms like can’t and didn’t.
They also learn the four sentence types (statement, question, exclamation and command), use expanded noun phrases such as “the blue butterfly”, and use the past and present tense correctly. Short, regular practice of spelling rules makes a big difference at this age.
Key goals for Year 2 include:
- add suffixes such as –ment, –ness, –ful, –less and –ly to spell longer words
- spell common contractions with the apostrophe in the right place
- write statements, questions, exclamations and commands
- use capital letters, full stops, question marks and commas for lists
