Ask which words in the text support the answer, then reread that part.

Helping your child with phonics & reading words
Reading beyond a single syllable
In Year 2, children continue applying phonics while reading words with more than one syllable and common endings. Compound word workshop makes the parts visible: sun and set become sunset. Read each part accurately, join them and then read the whole word at a natural pace. The meaning may help confirm the reading, but a picture or a guess should not replace looking at the letters.
Keep the school sequence in view
Choose decodable books matched to the correspondences your child has learned. When a longer word causes difficulty, mark a useful part with a finger and return to blending. After working out a word, reread the full sentence so the attention returns to meaning. Common exception words and unfamiliar spelling patterns still need explicit teaching; the compound-word game is a selected practice opportunity.
Try a concrete example
Write rain and bow on separate cards. Read each card, slide them together and read rainbow. Ask what the complete word means, then find it in a sentence. If the child pauses, return to the letters and blend rather than supplying a picture clue.
Curriculum connection
The reading and writing connections use the Year 2 programme of study. This collection offers selected practice rather than the complete programme. Read the official English programme of study.
Questions families ask
Does the game cover all Year 2 phonics?
No. It practises a small set of compound words. Follow the school’s systematic phonics teaching for the full range of correspondences and endings.
How should we choose the next challenge?
Start with a skill the child is learning at school. Use the game as a short practice opportunity, then return to a real book, a useful piece of writing or a conversation. Follow the teacher’s sequence where it differs.
