Playing Compound word workshop

Match each pair of small words to the compound word. Read both parts, then blend the whole word. Find six pairs without a timer.

What this game practises

Compound words offer a manageable way to read words with more than one syllable. Start by recognising the familiar parts, then read the complete word naturally. This game uses a selected set of closed compounds; many other word combinations are written separately. Afterwards, find compound words in a familiar book and discuss their meanings.

Progress and trying again

The normal game controls let children finish, save stars on this device and play again. A previous best result is kept when a later attempt scores less. Matching games count incorrect pairs; ordering games score the first check of each round; sorting games give another chance after a mistake. Take time to talk about a choice rather than racing.
