What children learn in Year 5 English
In Year 5, children learn to add detail and nuance to their writing. Relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose or that let them add extra information about a noun in the middle of a sentence.
They also use modal verbs and adverbs (might, should, perhaps) to show how likely something is, use brackets, dashes or commas for parenthesis, and link paragraphs with adverbials of time, place and number.
Key goals for Year 5 include:
- write relative clauses with the correct relative pronoun
- use modal verbs and adverbs to show possibility
- use brackets, dashes or commas for parenthesis
- link ideas across paragraphs
