What children learn in Year 1 maths

Year 1 is the first year of Key Stage 1, usually for children aged 5 to 6. The National Curriculum says the main focus of maths at this stage is to build confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value, using objects and pictures as well as numerals and words.

Children count to and across 100, forwards and backwards, and count in 2s, 5s and 10s. They read and write numbers to 20 in words, find 1 more and 1 less than a number, and use number bonds and subtraction facts within 20. They meet multiplication and division through grouping and sharing, and fractions through halves and quarters of shapes and quantities.

Measurement and geometry run alongside number: comparing lengths, weights and capacities, recognising coins and notes, telling the time to the hour and half past, and naming common 2-D and 3-D shapes.

Key goals for Year 1 include:

  • Count to 100 and back from any number
  • Know number bonds within 20 and use them to add and subtract
  • Use the +, − and = signs, including in missing number problems
  • Find halves and quarters of shapes and small quantities
