What children learn in Year 3 maths

Year 3 is the first year of lower Key Stage 2, usually for children aged 7 to 8. The focus moves to becoming increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, and to developing efficient written and mental methods.

Pupils work with three-digit numbers, find 10 or 100 more or less than a number, and add and subtract numbers with up to three digits using column methods. They learn the 3, 4 and 8 times tables and begin multiplying two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers.

Fractions become numbers in their own right: pupils count in tenths, place fractions on a number line, compare unit fractions and add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole. Measurement includes perimeter, money and telling the time using 12- and 24-hour clocks and Roman numerals I to XII.

Key goals for Year 3 include:

  • Know the 3, 4 and 8 times tables
  • Add and subtract three-digit numbers in columns
  • Understand fractions as numbers on a number line
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator
