What children learn in Year 6 English
Year 6 English prepares children for secondary school and the Key Stage 2 grammar, punctuation and spelling test. Children learn to use semi-colons, colons and dashes to mark boundaries between clauses, to introduce lists with a colon and to use hyphens to avoid ambiguity.
They also learn the passive voice, the difference between formal and informal language, and how synonyms and antonyms work. Confident punctuation helps children control longer, more complex sentences in their own writing.
Key goals for Year 6 include:
- use colons to introduce lists and semi-colons between closely linked clauses
- use hyphens to avoid ambiguity
- use the passive voice to change the focus of a sentence
- choose formal or informal language to suit the purpose
