What children learn in Year 5 science

In Year 5, children study Earth and space, forces, properties and changes of materials, life cycles, and human growth. In Earth and space they learn how the Earth and planets move around the Sun and how the Moon moves around the Earth.

They use these ideas to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky.

Key goals for Year 5 include:

  • name the planets in order from the Sun
  • explain day and night using the Earth's spin
  • describe how the Moon moves around the Earth

US equivalent: Year 5 pupils are about the age of Grade 4. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
