Learning about numbers and dates

In this Year 5 french collection, you can practise Days and months in French: lundi to dimanche. Choose a game above for a short activity, or explore the examples below before you play. The full guide for each game explains its controls, gives more examples and includes a free printable for practice away from the screen.

Talk it through

Practise a small set of words, return to them later, then use them in a phrase or exchange. Reading and matching are only part of learning a language: use a suitable spoken model and a conversation partner for pronunciation and listening practice.

Ask: “Can you use that word in a short phrase?” Give your child time to explain. Return to an example after playing and ask whether they would approach it differently.

Days and months in French: lundi to dimanche

Days and months let children talk about birthdays, the weather, timetables and the date at the top of their work. In French the week starts on ⟦fr|lundi⟧ (Monday) and ends on ⟦fr|dimanche⟧ (Sunday), and the months run from ⟦fr|janvier⟧ to ⟦fr|décembre⟧. Unlike English, French days and months are written with small letters.

Try an example: What is ⟦fr|mercredi⟧ in English?

It comes after ⟦fr|mardi⟧ (Tuesday).

Show the answer

Wednesday.

What to look out for

Mixing up ⟦fr|mardi⟧ and ⟦fr|mercredi⟧. ⟦fr|Mardi⟧ (Tuesday) comes first. Remember M-A before M-E, like in the alphabet.

Curriculum connections

These games support selected practice connected to Numbers and dates in the National Curriculum in England. The programme groups requirements by key stage; the year shown here is our suggested practice placement. A game covers selected examples, rather than assessing every requirement.
