What children learn in Year 5 history

Year 5 history often covers Britain’s settlement by the Anglo-Saxons and the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England, up to Edward the Confessor.

Children use maps, place names and sources such as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.

Key goals for Year 5 include:

  • explain who the Vikings were and where they came from
  • describe what Alfred the Great did
  • put key events from 793 to 1066 in order

US equivalent: Year 5 pupils are about the age of Grade 4. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
