What children learn in Year 3 history

Key Stage 2 history builds a chronological picture of British, local and world history. Many schools begin Year 3 with prehistoric Britain, from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, and a study of an early civilisation such as Ancient Egypt.

Children learn how archaeologists find out about the past and how to use dates and timelines.

Key goals for Year 3 include:

  • put the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages in order
  • describe how farming changed life in the Neolithic
  • name key features of Ancient Egypt

US equivalent: Year 3 pupils are about the age of Grade 2. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
