What children learn in Year 1 history

History in Key Stage 1 is taught across Years 1 and 2. Children learn about changes within living memory, events beyond living memory such as the Great Fire of London, and significant people and places from the past.

They start to use words about time, such as before, after, long ago and a long time ago, and to ask how we know about the past.

Key goals for Year 1 include:

  • retell the story of the Great Fire of London
  • say why the fire spread so quickly
  • explain how we know about events long ago

US equivalent: Year 1 pupils are about the age of Kindergarten. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
