What children learn in Year 1 geography
Geography in Key Stage 1 is taught across Years 1 and 2. In Year 1, children start to build a picture of the world: the seven continents and five oceans, and simple compass directions to describe where things are on a map.
They use world maps, atlases and globes, and begin to describe their own school and local area.
Key goals for Year 1 include:
- name the seven continents and five oceans
- use north, south, east and west on a simple map
- find the United Kingdom on a world map
US equivalent: Year 1 pupils are about the age of Kindergarten. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
