Full stop or question?

Give each sentence the right ending: a full stop or a question mark.

For parents and teachers

Playing Full stop or question?

Read a card, then choose Full stop or Question mark. Each card is missing its ending. Sort six cards in each of three rounds. You can try again after a mistake.

What this game practises

Children distinguish sentences that tell the reader something from sentences that ask a question. Each card starts with a capital letter and leaves off its ending so the choice has a clear purpose. Read the sentences aloud together, then find full stops and question marks in a familiar book. This is selected punctuation practice rather than the whole Year 1 grammar programme.

Progress and trying again

The normal game controls let children finish, save stars on this device and play again. A previous best result is kept when a later attempt scores less. Matching games count incorrect pairs; ordering games score the first check of each round; sorting games give another chance after a mistake. Take time to talk about a choice rather than racing.
