What children learn in Year 3 computing

Key Stage 2 computing builds on these ideas. In Year 3, many schools introduce programming with block-based tools such as Scratch, using sequence, selection (IF) and repetition (loops).

Children design, write and debug programs that achieve specific goals.

Key goals for Year 3 include:

  • explain the difference between selection and repetition
  • use a loop in a program
  • use an IF block to make a choice

US equivalent: Year 3 pupils are about the age of Grade 2. Each topic shows the closest Common Core standard.
