Learning about spelling

In this Grade 3 english collection, you can practice Suffixes: –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly. Choose a game above for a short activity, or explore the examples below before you play. The full guide for each game explains its controls, gives more examples and includes a free printable for practice away from the screen.

Talk it through

Read the example together before playing independently. Ask your child to explain a choice and try a new example afterwards. Match the task to what your child has already learned; grade suggestions are a starting point.

Ask: “Which part of the word or sentence helped you?” Give your child time to explain. Return to an example after playing and ask whether they would approach it differently.

Suffixes: –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly

The good news is that all five suffixes start with a consonant letter, so most of the time they are simply added straight on to the root word with no change at all: care + ful = careful, sad + ness = sadness. The main thing to learn is the exception. When a root word ends in a consonant followed by y, and the root word has more than one syllable, the y changes to i: happy + ness = happiness, penny + less = penniless. Learning that one rule, plus a few special words such as argument, lets children spell hundreds of longer words correctly.

Try an example: care + less = ?

–less starts with a consonant, so add it straight on. The e at the end of care stays.

What to look out for
