Talk it through
Read the example together before playing independently. Ask your child to explain a choice and try a new example afterwards. Match the task to what your child has already learned; grade suggestions are a starting point.
Ask: “Which part of the word or sentence helped you?” Give your child time to explain. Return to an example after playing and ask whether they would approach it differently.
Conjunctions: when, if, because, although
Conjunctions also do an important job for meaning. Because explains a reason, if sets a condition, when gives a time and although shows a contrast. Choosing the right one makes writing clearer: 'I wore my coat because it was cold' means something different from 'I wore my coat although it was warm'. In the game, children read a sentence and pick out the word that is doing the joining. Spotting conjunctions in other people's sentences is the first step to using them confidently in their own writing.
Try an example: Which word is the conjunction? “Sam smiled when he saw the puppy.”
The two ideas are 'Sam smiled' and 'he saw the puppy'. When joins them and tells us the time.

What to look out for
Choosing a describing word or an action word instead. Remind children that conjunctions do not describe anything or show an action. They only join. Covering the conjunction often leaves two separate ideas.
