Copy every detail

Keep capitals, word order and punctuation when copying.

For parents and teachers

About this game

Grade 2 handwriting builds the joining strokes and consistency needed for fluent, legible writing. Copy every detail provides a supporting observation task: capitals, omitted words, letter order and punctuation must survive a copy. The typed models deliberately use the same display font, so the game is about accuracy rather than deciding which physical handwriting style is correct. Compare The gate is shut. with The gate is shut and identify the missing period. Then copy a short sentence on paper, leaving clear spaces and following the joins taught at school. Ask a reader to check that the intended words and marks can be recognized. A neat-looking copy can still contain a meaningful omission.

Common Core does not set a handwriting standard at Grade 2. This Grade 2 game is enrichment practice for careful copying, not a standards claim.

Suggested for ages 7–8. Grade 2 is a starting point, not a rule for every class.

How to play

Each card shows an original, an arrow and a copy. Sort it into Exact copy or Changed copy. Check every letter, word and punctuation mark across three rounds.

Step by step

  1. Read. Read the card, sentence or story clue all the way through.
  2. Choose. Use the meaning, not a guess from the first word.
  3. Talk. After the round, explain one choice out loud.

Worked examples

Use the first item as a model. Read it aloud, name the clue that decides the answer, then choose. The same steps work for the next item.

Common mistakes

Choosing too quickly. Slow down and use the whole sentence or clue. A familiar word can still be the wrong choice.

At home

Play one round together, then let the learner try the next round. Ask which words decided the answer.

In class

Use one round as a warm-up. Invite a learner to explain a choice before the next card.

Printable

This on-screen game does not include a worksheet. Practice the same idea with paper and a pencil, using an example from the guide.
