The four seasons: what children learn

The four seasons used here are spring, summer, fall and winter. Weather, plants and animals change from one season to the next.

Suggested Kindergarten practice, selected by skill and reading demand. US states and schools teach these topics in different grades; this is not a state-standards alignment claim.

Next Generation Science Standards teaching connection: ESS2: seasonal patterns. Sorting seasonal pictures gives learners words for changes they can notice through the year. Follow the game by watching weather and plants where you live. This is a teaching connection to the NGSS approach, not a claim that the game meets a performance expectation. Read the framework.

How to play

Sort the cards into the right groups. Tap a card, then its group. You can also drag a card, or press the number on its group. Each game has 3 rounds with no timer. Every card is checked as soon as you place it: a card in the wrong group comes back with a hint, and you get a point for each card you place right first time. For a quicker go, choose Quick quiz: 8 multiple-choice questions in 240 seconds (choose Relaxed for more time).

Step by step

  1. Play together. Sit with your child and read the words on screen aloud. Let them do the tapping and dragging.
  2. Talk about the weather. Ask "Is it hot or cold?"
  3. Think about nature. Blossom in spring, falling leaves in fall.
  4. Sort it. Drop the card into the season box.

The free printable starts with a game sheet, such as a color-by-answer picture, an answer maze or a secret-code joke, followed by a worksheet. Both use the same checked questions as the online game, and the answers are on the last page. Print it, or save it as a PDF from your browser’s print menu.

Frequently asked questions

Do these pictures match every place?

No. The pictures use spring, summer, fall and winter. Other places have different weather, so talk about the seasons where you live.

Why only two boxes at a time?

Two choices keeps each round simple for young children.

Is there a timer?

Not in the main game: children sort at their own pace. The separate Quick quiz is optional and has a long, gentle timer; skip it with younger or less confident children.
