For parents and teachers

Explore statistics across grades. Choose by skill and readiness; the grades are a starting point, and this collection does not cover a whole curriculum.

Each game explains the Common Core connection it supports, or identifies itself as supplemental practice. Schools may teach topics in a different sequence. Read how we choose games.

Grade 2: Pictograms and tally charts

In this game each question describes a pictogram or tally chart. Children read the key, multiply or count on to find the total, and compare two rows to answer questions such as 'how many more?'. Reading the key first is the habit that matters most.

Supports part of Common Core 2.MD.D.10: picture graphs with a single-unit scale. Keys of 2, 5 and 10 go a little beyond it. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Common Core connection: 2.MD.D.10. This is focused practice for part of the standard.

Grade 2: Counting tally marks

In this game each card describes a tally, such as two gates of five and three single marks, and children match it to its total. Counting the gates in 5s first and then the single marks is quicker and more reliable than counting every mark.

Supports part of Common Core 2.MD.D.10: tally marks are a common way to record data for picture and bar graphs. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 3: Reading bar charts with scales

In this game children read the value of a bar from its scale, including bars that stop halfway between two marked numbers. Working out what each gap on the scale stands for is the key skill.

Supports part of Common Core 3.MD.B.3: scaled picture graphs and bar graphs (called bar charts in this game). This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Common Core connection: 3.MD.B.3. This is focused practice for part of the standard.

Grade 3: How many more? How many fewer?

In this game each card gives two values from a chart, and children match it to the difference. Whether the question says 'more' or 'fewer', the answer is the gap between the two numbers.

Supports part of Common Core 3.MD.B.3: solving "how many more" and "how many less" problems using scaled bar graphs. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 4: Time graphs

In this game children read values from time graphs described in each question, find rises and falls between two times, and work out distances travelled at a steady speed. Each answer comes from reading two points and comparing them.

Enrichment: time graphs are not a Common Core standard. They build on line plots (4.MD.B.4) and prepare for graphing points in Grade 5 (5.G.A.2).

Grade 4: Discrete or continuous data?

In this game children sort data sets into discrete and continuous. Discrete data is counted in whole numbers, like goals in a match. Continuous data is measured and can take any value in a range, like a child's height.

Enrichment: Common Core does not name discrete and continuous data. It links to representing measurement data in 4.MD.B.4.

Grade 4: Reading timetables

In this game every question shows the same bus timetable. Children find journey times between stops and the next bus after a given time. Reading across a row and down a column carefully is the skill being practiced.

Supports part of Common Core 4.MD.A.2: word problems with intervals of time. The timetable uses 24-hour times. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 5: Line graphs: rises and falls

In this game each card gives two readings from a temperature line graph, and children match it to the change: how much it rose or fell. Saying both the direction and the size of the change is what makes an answer complete.

Enrichment: line graphs are not a Common Core standard. The nearest is graphing points to solve real-world problems in 5.G.A.2.

Grade 6: The mean

In this game children find the mean of small data sets, and work backwards from a mean to a total. Every mean is a whole number, so children can focus on the method.

Supports part of Common Core 6.SP.B.5.c: measures of center, here the mean. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 6: Pie charts

In this game children match sectors to their angles, because a whole pie chart is 360°, and to amounts, because a fraction of the pie is the same fraction of the total. Linking fractions, angles and amounts is the skill being practiced.

Enrichment: pie charts (circle graphs) are not a Common Core standard. They combine fractions of a whole with angles, which are measured in Grade 4 (4.MD.C.5).
