For parents and teachers

Explore properties of shapes across grades. Choose by skill and readiness; the grades are a starting point, and this collection does not cover a whole curriculum.

Each game explains the Common Core connection it supports, or identifies itself as supplemental practice. Schools may teach topics in a different sequence. Read how we choose games.

Grade 1: 2-D and 3-D shapes

In this game children match a short description to the shape's name. Each description uses simple features a child can see or feel, such as straight sides, corners, a point or a curved surface, so they learn what makes each shape different.

Telling shapes apart by their defining attributes, such as sides, corners and faces, is Grade 1 standard 1.G.A.1. Naming flat and solid shapes starts in Kindergarten (K.G.A.2). This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Common Core connection: 1.G.A.1. This is focused practice for part of the standard.

Grade 1: Shape hunt: 3-D shapes in everyday objects

In this game children sort everyday objects into groups by the 3-D shape they are most like. Each round uses three shapes, so they compare shapes that are easy to mix up, such as cubes and cuboids, or cylinders and cones.

Review: describing everyday objects with shape names is Kindergarten standard K.G.A.1 in Common Core.

Grade 2: Sides and vertices of 2-D shapes

In this game children put sets of shapes in order by their number of sides or vertices, fewest first. To order them, they need to know that a triangle has 3 sides, a square and a rectangle 4, a pentagon 5, a hexagon 6 and an octagon 8.

Supports part of Common Core 2.G.A.1: recognizing shapes by their number of sides and angles. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 2: Faces, edges and vertices of 3-D shapes

In this game children match each 3-D shape to its properties, such as 6 square faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices for a cube. Several shapes have similar numbers, so children must know each shape well rather than guess.

Supports part of Common Core 2.G.A.1, which mentions faces of solid shapes. Counting edges and vertices goes a little beyond it.

Grade 4: Right angles: less, equal or greater?

In this game children sort angles, from clock hands to the corners of shapes, into less than a right angle, a right angle, and greater than a right angle. Comparing each angle with the square corner of a piece of paper is the method to use.

Supports part of Common Core 4.G.A.1: drawing and identifying right angles. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 4: Parallel and perpendicular lines

In this game children sort pairs of lines from everyday objects and shapes into parallel, perpendicular and neither. Parallel lines stay the same distance apart and never meet. Perpendicular lines meet at a right angle.

Supports part of Common Core 4.G.A.1: identifying perpendicular and parallel lines. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 4: Acute and obtuse angles

In this game children sort angles into acute, right angle and obtuse, using clock hands, shape corners and turns. An acute angle is less than a right angle. An obtuse angle is greater than a right angle but less than a straight line.

Supports part of Common Core 4.G.A.1: right, acute and obtuse angles. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 4: Triangles and quadrilaterals

In this game children match descriptions of sides, angles and parallel lines to shape names, from isosceles triangles to trapezoids and kites. Each description fits only one name, so children have to read every property.

Supports part of Common Core 4.G.A.2: classifying two-dimensional figures by parallel or perpendicular lines and angles, including right triangles. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 4: Angles in degrees

In this game children sort angles given in degrees into acute, right angle, obtuse and reflex. Knowing the boundaries, 90° and 180°, is all children need to sort any angle.

Supports part of Common Core 4.MD.C.5: angles measured in degrees. Reflex angles go a little beyond it. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 4: Angles on a line and at a point

In this game children use these facts to find missing angles on a straight line, around a point and in quarter turns. Every question needs one fact and one subtraction.

Supports part of Common Core 4.MD.C.7: angle measure is additive, so missing angles can be found by subtracting. This focused game does not cover the entire standard.

Grade 6: Missing angles

In this game children use these facts to find missing angles. Each question needs the right total, 180° for a triangle or 360° for a quadrilateral, and careful subtraction.

Enrichment beyond Grade 6: angles in triangles and vertical angles are Common Core 7.G.B.5 and 8.G.A.5. It builds on additive angle measure in 4.MD.C.7.

Grade 6: Parts of a circle

In this game children match descriptions and measurements to the parts of a circle. Some cards give a radius and ask for the diameter, or the other way round, so children practice doubling and halving.

Enrichment: radius, diameter and circumference are introduced in Common Core 7.G.B.4. This game only names the parts and links radius and diameter.
