Talk it through
Practice a small set of words, return to them later, then use them in a phrase or exchange. Reading and matching are only part of learning a language: use a suitable spoken model and a conversation partner for pronunciation and listening practice.
Ask: “Can you use that word in a short phrase?” Give your child time to explain. Return to an example after playing and ask whether they would approach it differently.
Spanish numbers 1 to 20: uno, dos, tres
In the game, children build each Spanish number word from letter tiles, with a plain letter as a decoy for every accent, so they have to choose the é in ⟦es|dieciséis⟧. The Quick quiz shows a Spanish number word and asks for its value, or gives a number and asks which Spanish word matches. Every word has one value, so there is always one right answer. Spotting the pattern from 16 to 19 is a good example of the curriculum’s aim to understand new words using what you already know. Watch the accent on ⟦es|dieciséis⟧: it is the only number to 20 that has one.
Try an example: What number is ⟦es|catorce⟧?
It comes after ⟦es|trece⟧ (13).
Show the answer
14.
What to look out for
Mixing up ⟦es|doce⟧ (12) and ⟦es|dos⟧ (2). Say them slowly: ⟦es|dos⟧ has one syllable, ⟦es|do-ce⟧ has two.
Practice away from the screen
- Count in Spanish while climbing the stairs or doing star jumps.
