Talk it through

Use a simple timeline to connect people and events. Ask how we know about the past, and distinguish a source from a later retelling. A matching or ordering game helps recall; explaining causes and comparing evidence take further discussion.

Ask: “What happened before this, and what changed afterwards?” Give your child time to explain. Return to an example after playing and ask whether they would approach it differently.

The Romans in Britain: Claudius, Boudica and Hadrian’s Wall

The Romans ruled Britain for nearly 400 years, from the invasion ordered by Emperor Claudius in AD 43 until about AD 410. Julius Caesar had come twice before, in 55 and 54 BC, but did not conquer the island. Under Roman rule, Britain gained straight stone roads, towns such as Londinium, forts, bath houses, amphitheatres and Hadrian’s Wall, and Latin became the language of government.

Try an example: Which Roman emperor ordered the invasion of Britain in AD 43?

Julius Caesar tried but did not conquer Britain. About a hundred years later another emperor sent a big army.

Follow the timeline with two sources and discuss what each reveals. A quiz does not replace source evaluation or a complete historical inquiry. Read the framework.
