Learning about spelling

In this Grade 2 english collection, you can practice Contractions with apostrophes. Choose a game above for a short activity, or explore the examples below before you play. The full guide for each game explains its controls, gives more examples and includes a free printable for practice away from the screen.

Talk it through

Read the example together before playing independently. Ask your child to explain a choice and try a new example afterwards. Match the task to what your child has already learned; grade suggestions are a starting point.

Ask: “Which part of the word or sentence helped you?” Give your child time to explain. Return to an example after playing and ask whether they would approach it differently.

Contractions with apostrophes

A contraction is a short way of writing two words as one. Some letters are left out, and an apostrophe shows where they used to be. Do not becomes don't, I am becomes I'm and they are becomes they're. Children hear contractions all the time in speech, so learning to spell them helps their writing sound natural.

Try an example: What is the short form of could not?

Write could not, cross out the o in not, join the words and put the apostrophe where the o was.

Show the answer

couldn't

What to look out for

Putting the apostrophe between the two words (did'nt). Remind children that the apostrophe goes where the missing letter was, not where the space was. Cross out the letters first, then place it.
